In support of facility upgrades, GEI provided the decommissioning and environmental site assessment of one 1,000-gallon underground storage tank (UST) at the Seattle Central College (SCC) in Seattle, Washington.

GEI was faced with several challenges throughout this project, including very a limited site footprint, fragile site access, and a very limited time frame.  In order to provide safe access and use to the area in the upcoming farmers’ market, GEI completed the UST decommissioning, UST environmental site assessment, backfilling, and demobilization in less than six days.

Key Tasks:

  • UST Decommissioning and Environmental Site Assessment

  • On-Site Field Testing

  • Health & Safety Management

Key Features:

  • Reclaimed and donated approximately 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel

  • Completed all tasks (UST decommissioning, Site Assessment, Site Restoration, and Demobilization) in less than 10 days.

  • Carefully choreographed site subcontractors to pump 33 truckloads (approximately 325 cubic yards) of CDF fill in under one day.

GEI completed UST decommissioning and environmental site assessment for three 20,000 gallon diesel tanks as part of a redevelopment of a 40-acre pharmaceutical campus which was recently acquired by one of the world’s largest online travel business.  For this project, the client opted for closure in place which included the installation of 33 truckloads (approximately 325 cubic yards) of controlled density fill (CDF) after properly cleaning and inerting each tank. Following the decommissioning activities, GEI completed a full UST environmental site assessment to investigate for potential environmental impacts related to the UST system.

Additionally, GEI managed the disposal of other non-related hazardous materials which were stockpiled at the site.

GEI completed the services ahead of schedule and under budget, thus providing construction crews and other stakeholders to advance their on-site activities.
